REDS-III Transfusion Medicine Research Program in China

The Recipient Epidemiology and Donor Evaluation Study-III (REDS-III) China Program aims to address scientific questions about the safety, adequacy, and utilization of the blood supply in China with a focus on HIV-related research questions. This program is a partnership between Johns Hopkins University (JHU, Baltimore, USA) and the Chinese Institute of Blood Transfusion (IBT, Chengdu, China), a branch of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (Beijing, China). This partnership provides operational support in all aspects of project management and coordination. Under the direction of JHU and IBT, FEi Systems operates the REDS III China in-country Central Data Coordinating Center. Seven blood centers and five hospitals are participating partners in the REDS-III China Program.

The REDS-III China Program is built on the previously successful collaborations between JHU and Chinese institutions. Past collaborative programs include the REDS II China Program (2006-2011), a multi-blood center nucleic acid testing (NAT) study on HIV and HCV; and the Fogarty International Blood Safety Training and Research Program, a pilot study on donor knowledge, attitude, and practice in Chinese donors and HIV Prevention Trial Network studies.

The laboratory at IBT carries out all REDS-III China laboratory-based research activities, including serological and molecular studies on known major transfusion-transmitted diseases (TTDs) and emerging infectious diseases. IBT’s Confirmatory Testing Laboratory also performs HIV, HBV, HCV, and syphilis confirmatory testing for all screen-reactive donations from Chinese blood centers participating the REDS III China Program.

  • Jiangsu province Hospital (Nanjing, Jiangsu)
  • Peking Union Hospital (Beijing Municipality)
  • West China Hospital (Chengdu, Sichuan)

The areas served by the participating blood centers and hospitals are diverse in terms of geography, ethnicity composition, and socioeconomic development. These areas also have relatively high HIV/AIDS prevalence in the general population.

REDS-III China Projects

Through this program epidemiologic, laboratory, and survey research is conducted in blood donors and transfusion recipients to obtain information on blood safety, availability, and utilization. Specific projects include the following:

  • Develop Longitudinal Donor and Donation Information Database
Data on blood donors and donations at all participating Chinese blood centers are collected in a standard manner and provided to the Central Coordinating Center with minimal delay to create a broad-based donation and donor monitoring system. FEi coordinates the technical aspects of developing and implementing uniform data collection from Chinese blood centers. Using the REDS III donor and donation database, Data on blood donors and donations at all participating Chinese blood centers are collected in a standard manner and provided to the Central Coordinating Center with minimal delay to create a broad-based donation and donor monitoring system. FEi coordinates the technical aspects of developing and implementing uniform data collection from Chinese blood centers. Using the REDS III donor and donation database,
  • HIV Molecular Epidemiology study (More info)

  • Establish an HIV-reactive Donor Sample Repository and Conduct Epidemiological and Molecular Studies in HIV-infected Donors (More info)

  • HIV Study in Blood Donors from Five Chinese Regions (More info)

  • Blood Utilization Study (More info)

  • Study of Severe Fever With Thrombocytopenia Syndrome Virus (SFTSV): Seroprevalence and Rates of Asymptomatic Viremia in Chinese Blood Donors From Four Chinese Regions (More info)

  • Human subjects research: All study protocols will be submitted for approval by China IBT’s Research Ethics Committee as well as the Institutional Review Board of Johns Hopkins Medical Institution and RTI before implementation. All facets of the studies will comply with National Institutes of Health and international research ethics guidelines. Human subjects participating in all REDS-III studies will provide informed consent.
